Thalassemia Awareness

Know Your Thalassemia Status

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects the production of hemoglobin. It is particularly prevalent in the Bhanushali community. Early detection through simple blood tests can help prevent the birth of children with Thalassemia Major.

The Trust actively promotes awareness and organizes regular screening camps for community members, especially before marriage.

What You Should Know

  • Thalassemia Minor (carrier) shows no symptoms but can pass the trait to children
  • If both parents are carriers, there is a 25% chance their child will have Thalassemia Major
  • A simple CBC and HPLC blood test can determine carrier status
  • Pre-marital screening is strongly recommended for all community members

Step 1: Get Tested

Visit any pathology lab and ask for CBC and HPLC tests to check your Thalassemia status.

Step 2: Counsel

If you are a carrier, ensure your partner is also tested before marriage. Seek genetic counselling.

Step 3: Spread Awareness

Share this knowledge with family and friends. Together we can eliminate Thalassemia Major from our community.
